AI safety proposals gain support without a defined slowdown

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has proposed that the artificial intelligence sector should “pace the frontier,” prompting a public debate over whether leading AI companies are prepared to slow development. On TechCrunch’s Equity podcast, Anthony Ha, Kirsten Korosec and Sean O’Kane examined the response from frontier AI labs, including support associated with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, alongside criticism from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

The central issue is not a formally announced reduction in model development. The discussion focused instead on safety proposals that could add oversight around frontier systems while leaving unanswered how they would affect the speed of commercial AI deployment.

Safety measures without a defined pace

Korosec described three broad ideas under discussion: independent third-party evaluators working inside companies such as Anthropic or OpenAI, monitoring of AI safety practices and incidents, and coordination among major AI companies in democratic countries on standards and limits. An international coordination element is also part of the wider conversation.

O’Kane said the plans remain short on specifics, both on the risks cited by advocates and on what “slowing down” would mean in practice. Ha similarly noted that the proposals might introduce basic safety measures and external scrutiny, but do not inherently require development to proceed more slowly than it does today.

The rapid alignment by prominent industry figures was encouraging as a sign of consensus, Ha said, but it also invited skepticism over whether it would produce major, genuine changes. Korosec cautioned that consensus among frontier labs can be constructive while also raising concerns about coordination among a small group of powerful companies.

Commercial incentives and weak market discipline

Huang has publicly echoed President Donald Trump’s position that the AI backlash is a hoax and that additional regulation is unnecessary. Korosec argued that Nvidia benefits when AI advances without being paced, while Ha said Trump’s and Huang’s interests were aligned in this debate.

The Equity discussion also challenged the assumption that existing regulation and market competition will reliably deter unsafe releases. O’Kane said the federal government does not appear eager to enforce regulation broadly, much less specifically in AI. He also questioned whether consumer choice has enough influence in a market increasingly shaped by enterprise sales.

Companies may find it difficult to switch from OpenAI’s Codex to Anthropic’s Claude Code solely because of a disagreement over a provider’s conduct. Large investment flows can also help AI companies absorb losses if they face them. For businesses adopting AI, voluntary commitments should therefore be assessed alongside the specific oversight, incident processes, standards and accountability mechanisms a vendor can actually explain.
