Google rolls out Motion Assist and Gemini accessibility tools for Android

Google has announced five Android updates spanning motion-sickness support, visual accessibility, item recall and messaging. The rollout includes Motion Assist for Android 17, while the Gemini-powered Guided Vision feature is coming to phones running Android 9 and newer in countries where Gemini is available.

Motion Assist is intended for people who experience motion sickness while using a phone in a moving vehicle. It adds a bubble overlay that responds to the vehicle’s movement, with the aim of reducing the disconnect between what appears on screen and what the user’s body feels. The feature can be enabled automatically, placed in Quick Settings and adjusted through its bubble shape, colour and transparency settings.

Accessibility features extend Gemini’s role

Guided Vision combines a phone camera with Gemini to assist blind and low-vision users. Google says it can help with tasks such as reading small print on a food label, viewing a menu in a dark restaurant and identifying objects around the home.

The tool can also provide spoken framing guidance when the camera is not pointed correctly. It may tell a user to move the phone, pan around or centre an object. Its availability depends on both the Android version and whether Gemini is available in the relevant country.

The release continues the Android direction set by Google’s Android Gemini and widget updates, where Google positioned Gemini alongside broader platform and personalisation changes. In this update, the AI service is applied to camera-assisted guidance and to recalling details that users choose to save.

Find Hub and Messages receive practical additions

Google is adding a remembered-items section to Find Hub. Users can tell Gemini where an important object was placed, such as a passport in a bedroom drawer, and the information can be saved in Find Hub. They can also attach a photograph to make the item easier to identify later.

Google Messages is gaining a Google Keep integration for sharing and editing grocery lists, holiday notes and other material directly in a conversation. Individual chats will also support customised backgrounds, photos and colours, with text bubbles set to match the chosen design.
