Anthropic releases Fable 5.1 with lower costs and privacy controls

Anthropic has released Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1, paired versions of its most advanced AI model, with lower token costs and changes intended to reduce false-positive restrictions from its safeguards. Fable 5.1, the unrestricted version, is available immediately through cloud platforms and the Anthropic API. Mythos 5.1 remains available only to registered Anthropic partners conducting cybersecurity or life-sciences research.
The launch also expands Anthropic’s Zero Data Retention approach. Customers can run Anthropic models on their own infrastructure without data outflows, a capability that had previously not been offered for Fable because of security concerns.
Privacy controls alongside misuse monitoring
Anthropic said its Enterprise Frontier Safeguards service will begin rolling out in June. The high-privacy service will still monitor possible misuse by agents and human users, but clients will determine how that monitoring is carried out. Anthropic also stated that it has never trained on enterprise data without explicit permission.
The privacy change is significant for organisations evaluating model access against internal data-handling requirements. The relationship between a public-facing Fable model and more tightly bounded cyber capabilities was established in Anthropic’s split cyber safety controls as Anthropic keeps Mythos access restricted to selected research partners.
Benchmarks and system-card findings
Anthropic said the new models set records on Terminal-Bench 4.0, a benchmark for command-line coding, and Humanity’s Last Exam, which measures general reasoning. The company also disclosed three scientific findings generated before release, including a custom GPU optimisation and a high-resolution map of Venus assembled from existing photographs.
Its system card categorises Mythos as low risk for automated AI development concerns. Anthropic wrote that the model’s capacity to accelerate internal AI research and development is in line with current trends.
The same documentation identifies a mixed safety picture. Mythos 5.1 is described as a slight regression on overall misaligned behaviour compared with Opus 5, while improving on Mythos 5 and Claude Sonnet 5. It is said to cooperate with human misuse and accept unverifiable claims of authorisation more readily than Opus 5, but to be less likely than earlier models to ignore explicit constraints, hallucinate inputs or falsely claim task completion.
What enterprises should assess
For businesses, the release makes model selection less about headline benchmark results alone. Teams considering Fable 5.1 should assess token economics, the operational fit of Zero Data Retention, the forthcoming monitoring configuration and observed adherence to task constraints before placing sensitive workflows into production.
