Anthropic agrees to rent roughly $45 billion in Nscale compute

Anthropic has signed an agreement to rent about $45 billion in AI computing capacity from British AI infrastructure company Nscale. A person familiar with the transaction told TechCrunch that the capacity is expected to begin powering Anthropic’s services in late 2027.

Bloomberg first reported the agreement and said it runs for six years. The computing power is set to come from Nscale’s flagship data centre in West Virginia, adding another large infrastructure commitment to Anthropic’s expanding compute portfolio.

Nscale to supply Nvidia Vera Rubin-based capacity

Nscale, founded in 2024, will supply Anthropic with compute based on Nvidia’s Vera Rubin chips. Nvidia describes the Vera Rubin system as a new state-of-the-art chip system that brings six different chips together in concert.

The British infrastructure company has already signed deals with companies including Microsoft. Its agreement with Anthropic places a young AI infrastructure provider inside one of the sector’s largest reported long-term compute arrangements.

A sequence of major infrastructure commitments

The Nscale contract is the latest in a run of compute partnerships Anthropic has made over the past eight months as it seeks more capacity to compete with rivals, particularly OpenAI. Earlier in the month, Anthropic signed a $10 billion agreement with AI cloud startup Volta for a six-year supply of cloud computing power from a data centre in Norway.

In July, Anthropic also entered a $5 billion compute-related deal with AMD. In May, it disclosed a large arrangement with SpaceX, drawing capacity from two SpaceX data centres and reportedly providing $1.25 billion of capacity each month.

Anthropic expanded its Amazon relationship in April, gaining access to an additional 5 gigawatts of compute. The scale of that relationship is reflected in Anthropic plans major AWS spending as Anthropic plans major AWS spending, while its April expansion also coincided with broader relationships involving Google and Broadcom.

Compute procurement becomes a strategic planning issue

Anthropic is not alone in pursuing more AI capacity. Google, OpenAI and Meta are also competing to secure infrastructure as demand for AI computing resources grows.

For businesses that depend on AI providers, these multiyear commitments show that service capacity increasingly rests on long-term agreements across chip systems, cloud operators and data-centre sites. Infrastructure planning should therefore be evaluated alongside model selection, supplier concentration and the timing of expected service demand.
