Ternus positions iPhone as Apple’s intelligent personal hub

Apple sets out its iPhone-first AI strategy

Apple CEO John Ternus used the company’s Surprise and Shine event in Cupertino to argue that the iPhone is already the world’s best AI device. The remarks were his opening statement of Apple’s positioning in the AI market after he took over from Tim Cook, who is now executive chairman.

Rather than present a separate category of hardware for artificial intelligence, Ternus said Apple intends for the iPhone to remain the central way consumers use the technology. He described the target product as an “intelligent personal hub” and then contended that its required features closely match those of the iPhone.

What Apple says an AI hub requires

Ternus said an intelligent personal hub must have a broad understanding of a user’s personal context and be available whenever it is needed. It also needs a powerful processor able to run AI models on-device, as well as an internet connection for access to cloud-based models.

He added that such a device needs a large display, high-quality cameras and microphones to see and hear the world around the user, and long battery life. Ease of use is another requirement, Ternus said, alongside seamless operation with other devices, applications and services. In his formulation, those capabilities should form one integrated experience rather than impose a substantial learning curve.

“In other words, you would arrive at something remarkably familiar, because there’s no product in the world better designed to be your intelligent personal hub than iPhone,” Ternus said.

Privacy becomes the stated differentiator

Ternus also made data privacy a direct point of differentiation for Apple’s AI platform. He said that other companies view personal data as something to collect and store, while arguing that trust has limits once users no longer control their data.

That position is relevant in a market shaped by partnerships, device access and competitive claims around AI hardware, including commercial tensions in the AI-device race as it illustrates the commercial tensions surrounding the AI-device race.

Apple’s stated technical response is that Apple Intelligence runs on-device whenever it can. The company is therefore tying its AI proposition to local model execution where possible, while retaining cloud access as part of the device description outlined by Ternus.

Business implication

For businesses assessing Apple’s AI direction, the practical implication is to examine which workflows can use on-device processing, which require cloud models, and how data control is maintained across the apps and services employees already use.
