Boston Scientific Cyberattack Disrupts Global Operations

Boston Scientific has disclosed that a cyberattack is causing an ongoing global disruption to its operations. In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Massachusetts-based medical device manufacturer said that it began experiencing disruptions and limited access to IT systems and business applications critical to its operations on Tuesday.
The company said the incident has affected its ability to ship and process orders. Boston Scientific manufactures implanted medical devices including pacemakers and defibrillators, and says it treats around 48 million patients each year. It has not stated whether the disruption affects customers using its devices or implants.
Order fulfilment affected as investigation continues
Boston Scientific said its investigation remains ongoing and that it does not yet know when its systems will be restored. The company has not disclosed what caused the cyberattack. A spokesperson provided the company’s public statement but did not comment on whether patients were affected, what actions patients should take, or the nature of the incident.
Local media in Ireland reported that thousands of employees at Boston Scientific’s Cork campus were sent home on Tuesday after network communications were cut across the company. The available disclosures therefore point to an incident with consequences for internal connectivity and order-related business processes, while the scope of any impact beyond those functions remains unclear.
A continuing pattern in health technology
Boston Scientific is the latest health technology company reported to have suffered a cyberattack this year. Medical device makers Abbott Laboratories and Medtronic have also been affected. Earlier this year, Iranian-backed hackers were blamed for an attack on Stryker that enabled the remote wiping of tens of thousands of employee devices across its Windows network through abuse of a Microsoft centralized device-management portal.
Public internet records indicate that Boston Scientific relies largely on Microsoft and Amazon Web Services for its corporate infrastructure. That does not establish a connection between those services and this incident, but it highlights the importance of understanding which platforms support order processing, communications and other critical operations.
Business implication
For healthcare manufacturers, the immediate business issue is not only system recovery but maintaining safe, controlled fulfilment when normal applications are unavailable. Organisations should identify critical order-processing dependencies, maintain tested manual or alternative workflows, and prepare precise communications for staff and customers while the technical investigation continues.
