OpenAI Adds Interactive Plugin Panels and Automations to ChatGPT
OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT’s plugin capabilities with app-like interfaces, dedicated sidebar placement and support for event-driven automations. Announced at the company’s Dev Day presentation, the changes let developers build interactive panels within ChatGPT, rather than limiting integrations to basic connections with external services.
Existing ChatGPT plugins connect the service to tools including Slack, SharePoint, Airtable and Google Drive. Under the new model, an application can have a dedicated home in the ChatGPT sidebar, where users can work with its functions while continuing a conversation with the AI assistant.
Plugins move toward embedded applications
OpenAI said developers can create interactive panels for their products inside ChatGPT. These experiences can also include file viewers that support the formats used by a developer’s own product, allowing the plugin interface to accommodate files relevant to that tool.
The company is also extending where these integrations can appear. ChatGPT Sites, the lightweight websites users can build with ChatGPT, can host plugins. A user could therefore share an app with colleagues, who would use it with their own connected data and permissions.
Creation, discovery and permissions
For developers, OpenAI is introducing a Plugin Creator tool and a redesigned submission process for the plugin directory. The new flow is intended to offer clearer feedback during submission. OpenAI also said it has improved the way plugins are ranked and recommended in the directory and surfaced during conversations.
Access controls remain part of the interaction: when a user selects a plugin, they can approve its access requirements individually. That distinction matters where a connected tool exposes business information or performs actions on behalf of a user.
The direction fits OpenAI’s wider effort to position ChatGPT for workplace use, as ChatGPT Work adoption at OpenAI underlines the scale of ChatGPT Work adoption while these new interfaces extend how connected tools can operate inside the product.
Event-based automation support
OpenAI is adding support for the proposed MCP Events specification. The specification would allow plugins to begin automations when an event occurs in a connected application. The company also said it is making automations easier to add and manage.
For businesses, the practical implication is to evaluate plugins as interfaces to governed systems, not merely as chat add-ons: teams should review each plugin’s permissions, connected data and automation triggers before putting it into routine work.
