DoorDash invests $425 million in Wonder and buys campus dining unit

DoorDash has agreed transactions worth a combined $425 million with food technology company Wonder. The delivery platform will acquire Wonder’s Grubhub Campus Dining business, formerly Tapingo, for $300 million and invest $125 million in Wonder’s $650 million Series D financing round announced in July.

The agreement gives DoorDash a campus-focused ordering operation that is already live at 450 colleges and universities. Wonder, founded by e-commerce entrepreneur Marc Lore, will receive additional capital as it continues to build a network of delivery-oriented food halls and restaurant brands.

Campus dining moves into DoorDash’s platform

DoorDash said it intends to expand Grubhub Campus Dining beyond colleges and universities into stadiums, hotels and other venues. Tony Xu, DoorDash co-founder, said adding the business to the platform would provide college students with more choice and convenience while streamlining operations and reducing friction for universities.

Grubhub Campus Dining originated as Tapingo before becoming part of Grubhub. Wonder acquired Grubhub last year for $650 million, bringing that campus operation into its portfolio. The new sale separates the campus dining business from Wonder again while establishing DoorDash as both its buyer and an investor in Wonder.

Wonder expands its food operating model

Wonder operates ghost-kitchen food halls designed for delivery, allowing customers to order from multiple restaurant concepts under one roof. Its model is aimed at making fast-casual meals available through a common operating system rather than through a single restaurant format.

The company has also assembled a broader collection of food brands and services. Alongside Grubhub, its portfolio includes Blue Apron and Tastemade, and Wonder has bought New York City restaurant chains Mighty Quinn’s BBQ, Salt Hank’s and Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken.

Wonder says it has reached 157 locations, more than quadrupling its footprint since the start of 2025. It plans to expand to Texas in early 2027. Lore said the DoorDash partnership lets the company focus on its longer-term goal of an autonomous food system that can plan, produce and deliver personalized meals at scale.

What operators should watch

For universities, venues and food-service operators, the transaction shows how ordering technology, venue operations and delivery networks are being combined in a single commercial channel. Businesses considering similar platforms should evaluate the operational fit, customer choice and workflow effects alongside the delivery reach offered by a marketplace.
