Report: Eric Schmidt Holds an Estimated 1% Stake in Anthropic

Schmidt’s reported holding could be worth $20 billion

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt reportedly owns about 1% of Anthropic, a stake that Bloomberg estimates is roughly half the 2% held by co-founder and chief executive Dario Amodei. The reported position stems from Schmidt’s investment of tens of millions of dollars in Anthropic’s 2021 Series A financing round.

PitchBook data put Anthropic’s valuation at $461 million at that time. Bloomberg’s estimate has not been confirmed by either Schmidt or Anthropic: both did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Anthropic is widely expected to go public before the end of the year. At the highest market estimate cited, a $2 trillion valuation would make a 1% stake worth as much as $20 billion. Bloomberg currently puts Schmidt’s net worth at $57.5 billion.

Ownership estimates put leadership stakes in context

The reported ownership comparison is notable because it would place Schmidt’s stake at about half of Amodei’s, despite Schmidt being an outside investor rather than an Anthropic founder or executive. The figures remain reported estimates rather than a disclosed capitalization table.

Anthropic’s funding trajectory has already drawn attention as it approaches a possible public listing. The scale of its latest financing is reflected in Anthropic’s $65 billion funding round and reinforces why even small percentage holdings are receiving close scrutiny as the company’s valuation expectations rise.

Schmidt has invested in technology companies since leaving the Google chief executive role in 2011. He deploys capital through several entities, including Tomorrow Ventures, Innovation Endeavors Management and his family office, Hillspire.

Schmidt maintains several AI investments

Anthropic is not Schmidt’s only artificial-intelligence investment. His other AI bets include Mistral, General Intuition and Reflection AI, illustrating his exposure across several companies in the sector.

For businesses evaluating vendors, partners or market signals around Anthropic, the practical implication is to treat ownership and valuation figures as reported estimates until the company provides formal public disclosures, while recognising that an IPO could make its shareholder structure more visible.
