Fervo Starts Grid Sales at Cape Station Geothermal Plant

Fervo Starts Grid Sales at Cape Station Geothermal Plant

Fervo Energy began selling electricity from its Cape Station enhanced geothermal power plant to the grid on September 30, one day ahead of schedule. The first block reached commercial operations 23 months after groundbreaking, and represents the first third of a power plant planned to reach 100 megawatts.

The company said the facility had synchronized with the grid about a week before the start of sales. Fervo describes the milestone as the first time an enhanced geothermal company has reached this stage of commercial operation.

A commercial milestone for enhanced geothermal

Cape Station is being developed in blocks, rather than as a single completed project. Fervo co-founder and chief executive Tim Latimer said no team had built a project like it anywhere in the world and that the first block was completed ahead of schedule.

Fervo aims to shorten construction of future blocks to as little as 18 months as it refines its process. The company has previously said the wider Cape Station site could eventually generate up to 4 gigawatts of electricity, far beyond the initial 100-megawatt plant now being brought online.

Google, Southern California Edison and other buyers have committed to purchase power from the Cape Station project. Those commitments place the project within a market where data-center operators are seeking additional generating capacity.

Why deeper drilling changes the development model

Traditional geothermal generation uses heat sources closer to the surface. Fervo and other enhanced geothermal developers drill deeper to reach hotter rock, expanding the potential locations for geothermal development.

Fervo was founded in 2017 and applies drilling techniques and technologies from the oil and gas sector to create new geothermal resources. The company went public in May through an upsized IPO that raised $1.9 billion. Before that listing, it had raised more than $1.3 billion from investors including Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Congruent Ventures and Capricorn Investment Group.

Implications for capacity planning

The phased approach can resemble the way data centers are developed: capacity can be added as demand increases rather than waiting for an entire site to be completed. For businesses evaluating electricity supply for expanding computing infrastructure, Cape Station makes construction cadence, contracted power purchases and the ability to add generation in stages practical factors to assess.
