Google’s Gemini app exceeds 1 billion monthly active users

Google’s Gemini app exceeds 1 billion monthly active users

Google’s standalone Gemini app has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, Chief Executive Sundar Pichai announced on X. Pichai described Gemini as one of Google’s fastest-growing products and said it is the 14th Google product to pass the one-billion-user threshold.

The figure applies specifically to the Gemini app. It does not include people using Gemini-powered features through other Google channels, even as the company continues to place the assistant across Search, Workspace, Android and its wider product portfolio.

An app-specific milestone

Google’s announcement puts the Gemini app on pace with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which reached 1 billion monthly active users in June. The distinction between the app and Google’s broader AI footprint is important: Google says AI Mode in Search alone has more than 1 billion monthly active users globally, but those users are not included in the new Gemini app total.

The company had reported more than 950 million monthly Gemini users during its Q2 2026 earnings call, when it also said daily active users had tripled over the preceding year. The subsequent one-billion figure signals that the standalone product has continued to add users after that update.

Voice, images and iOS usage

Google also provided indicators of how the chatbot is being used. It says 63% of Gemini users communicate directly with the assistant through its voice feature, while Gemini now generates more than 150 million images each day.

Its reach also extends beyond Google’s own mobile platform. Google says Gemini has more than 100 million active users on iOS. The company is continuing to release models and features, including Gemini 3.5 Flash, which it says is intended to improve coding work and autonomous AI-agent tasks.

Product changes such as Gemini Daily Brief, interface and video-model updates Gemini Daily Brief, interface and video-model updates illustrate how the app is being expanded alongside Google’s broader Gemini integration. The milestone arrived ahead of Google’s Made by Google event, where further Gemini-powered features are expected across Pixel devices.

What businesses should measure

For businesses evaluating AI tools, the announcement highlights the value of distinguishing service-wide exposure from adoption of a particular app or workflow. App usage, voice interaction and image-generation figures can each describe different patterns of customer engagement, so deployment decisions should be based on the metric that matches the intended use case.
