Google adds Personal Intelligence to Gemini in Android Auto

Google adds Personal Intelligence to Gemini in Android Auto

Google has begun rolling out Personal Intelligence with Gemini in Android Auto, expanding the in-car assistant’s ability to use information from connected Google services. The opt-in feature can draw on Gmail, Google Calendar, YouTube, Maps, Google Search history and other connected services to understand a driver’s preferences, activities and past experiences.

Google said the rollout starts in Android Auto today and will reach cars equipped with Google Built-in in the coming months. Android Auto runs on a user’s phone and wirelessly projects navigation, media and messaging onto a vehicle’s infotainment display, while Google Built-in is integrated directly into the vehicle.

Context from connected Google services

Gemini first launched in Android Auto last November. The vehicle update extends Personal Intelligence, which Google rolled out across the United States in March and is now testing in global markets. It is designed to connect information across a user’s Google apps rather than answer each request in isolation.

The automotive rollout builds on Gemini expansion across Google Built-in vehicles with a more personal data layer that can combine travel, calendar and search context in the same interaction. Google positioned the change as a way for Gemini to understand the user’s current activity and relevant history.

Natural-language follow-ups while driving

Google’s example is a driver navigating to an airport whose Google Calendar contains a flight. Gemini may alert that driver that the flight has been delayed. The driver can then ask for the flight gate and immediately ask whether the flight is still on time; Google said Gemini can return answers to both questions together.

The company said users retain control over Personal Intelligence. They must opt in before it works, can turn the feature on or off at any time, and can select the individual apps they want to connect. Those choices are central because the feature depends on cross-service access to personal information.

Implications for organisations

For organisations whose staff use connected vehicles, the update makes data permissions an operational issue as well as a convenience feature. Teams can review which Google services are appropriate to connect, explain opt-in choices to employees and test the assistant against real travel tasks before treating its contextual responses as part of a business workflow.
