IBM expands enterprise AI portfolio through OpenAI partnership

IBM expands enterprise AI portfolio through OpenAI partnership

IBM has partnered with OpenAI to bring OpenAI’s models and tools to enterprise customers through IBM Consulting. The companies will jointly market AI offerings and develop industry-specific solutions for financial services, government, telecommunications and retail.

IBM will establish a dedicated OpenAI practice within IBM Consulting and train and certify tens of thousands of consultants over the coming months. Mike Healy, managing partner at IBM Consulting, said the effort will primarily retrain existing employees on OpenAI technologies.

Consulting deployment is central to the agreement

The training programme covers OpenAI’s Codex, API, cybersecurity and consultative solution credentials. IBM will also create a group of specialised Forward Deployed Experts trained through OpenAI’s Partner Network.

IBM plans to integrate GPT-5.6, Codex and ChatGPT Work into IBM Consulting Advantage, its AI platform for consultants. The stated aim is to help clients deploy AI across core business operations rather than simply provide access to individual models.

OpenAI extends its enterprise route to market

The agreement gives OpenAI another channel to large organisations through IBM’s global consulting operation. It follows OpenAI partnerships with IT services companies including Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services, reflecting its strategy of working with global systems integrators on enterprise deployments.

The enterprise contest has increasingly focused on winning corporate customers and supporting large-scale implementation, an area in which enterprise AI competition among major providers illustrates the competitive pressure among major AI providers and their partners. IBM’s agreement with OpenAI also arrives less than a year after its alliance with Anthropic.

IBM maintains a multi-model approach

For IBM, the deal expands a model-agnostic approach that combines its Granite family with third-party models through watsonx and its consulting business. IBM is seeking to accelerate AI growth after lowering its 2026 revenue forecast following weaker-than-expected quarterly results.

IBM Chief Executive Arvind Krishna has described AI as a long-term growth driver and said adoption complements rather than replaces demand for the company’s mainframe business. The new agreement also extends IBM and OpenAI’s June cybersecurity collaboration: OpenAI models will be integrated with IBM Autonomous Security, a multi-agent-powered cybersecurity service.

For businesses, the practical implication is to evaluate enterprise AI programmes not only by model selection, but also by the consulting skills, industry integration and security capabilities available for deployment.
