India’s mobile app market shifts from downloads to paid subscriptions

India’s mobile app market generated a record $345 million in consumer spending in Q2 2026, Sensor Tower reported. Revenue increased 35% year over year even as quarterly downloads remained near 6.3 billion, broadly unchanged since 2023.

Why monetization is improving

India has long combined enormous download volumes with weak revenue per user. That constraint is easing: revenue per download has more than doubled over the past three and a half years as consumers become more comfortable paying for subscriptions and premium digital services.

Sensor Tower attributes the change partly to wider adoption of the Unified Payments Interface and digital wallets. These payment methods reduce friction during checkout and make recurring in-app purchases accessible to more users.

AI and subscriptions lead spending

Generative AI is among the fastest-growing categories. ChatGPT and Claude together captured nearly 83% of India’s AI app revenue in Q2. Google One became the country’s highest-grossing mobile app, while Amazon Prime Video, Crunchyroll, Sony LIV and JioHotstar also increased consumer spending.

“India is no longer just the world’s largest market by downloads, but is also emerging as one of the fastest-growing markets for app monetization,” Sensor Tower analyst Eve Chen said.

Non-gaming apps produced 68% of mobile app revenue in the first half of 2026, compared with 58% three years earlier. Gaming revenue still rose 3.7% from the previous quarter despite a worldwide decline. The latest figures extend the pattern of rising mobile app revenue in India, with global subscription services capturing a substantial share of new spending.

Growth remains uneven

Appfigures sees continued subscription growth but says the pace has slowed after an AI-driven surge. It estimates that ChatGPT now generates about $60,000 a day in India and recorded 1.8 million downloads over the latest month, down from roughly $80,000 in daily revenue last October.

For businesses, India can no longer be treated solely as an acquisition market. Products with localized pricing, low-friction payments and clear recurring value now have a stronger basis for paid conversion, although revenue per download still trails mature markets by a wide margin.
