Apple appoints John Ternus as chief executive
John Ternus has assumed the role of Apple chief executive, taking over from Tim Cook after 15 years in the post. Ternus, 51, had served as Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering and now leads one of the world’s most valuable companies.
The transition comes ahead of Apple’s next iPhone launch event. It also precedes the rollout of an updated Siri experience powered by Google’s Gemini, placing hardware releases and the company’s AI plans among the early issues confronting the new chief executive.
Ternus joined Apple in 2001 on its product design team, after working at virtual-reality device maker Virtual Research Systems. He became a vice president of hardware engineering in 2013 and was promoted to senior vice president in 2021. Before becoming CEO, he reported to Cook and led Apple’s hardware engineering organisation.
A hardware career spanning Apple’s product portfolio
His early work included checking components for Apple Cinema Display monitors. In a 2024 commencement address at the University of Pennsylvania’s engineering school, Ternus recalled finding screw heads with 35 grooves where the specification called for 25. The episode illustrated the component-level scrutiny expected in Apple’s product development process.
As his responsibilities expanded, Ternus oversaw hardware development for products including AirPods, Apple Watch and Vision Pro. He also contributed to Apple’s transition from Intel chips to proprietary Apple silicon, a major change in the company’s approach to Mac processors.
Most recently, he was involved in producing the MacBook Neo, Apple’s lower-cost laptop. The model uses hardware design trade-offs, including an iPhone chip, while Ternus said the company sought to preserve Apple’s product quality. The company’s device strategy is central to Apple hardware strategy and AI devices as Apple combines hardware leadership with AI-enabled experiences.
Immediate questions for the new CEO
Ternus is 15 years younger than Cook and was among the younger executives discussed as a possible successor. Apple has had only two CEOs during this millennium, making the long tenure implied by the appointment notable for a company that has emphasised leadership continuity.
The new CEO must guide Apple’s effort to catch up in AI, including the Gemini-powered Siri upgrade, while determining the future direction of the technology behind Vision Pro. His background is rooted in the products that define Apple’s business, from Macs and iPhones to wearables and spatial computing.
