macOS 27 Golden Gate expands Siri across the Mac desktop

macOS 27 Golden Gate expands Siri across the Mac desktop

Apple has released macOS 27 Golden Gate for supported Apple Silicon Macs, expanding Siri with desktop-aware AI features, new Visual Intelligence controls and tighter Spotlight integration. The update is available for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models from 2020 or later with Apple Silicon, Apple Silicon iMac models from 2021 or later, Mac mini from 2020 or later, Mac Studio from 2022 or later, Mac Pro from 2023 or later, and MacBook Neo.

Siri in macOS 27 has the same core capabilities as its iOS 27 counterpart, but it can use the Mac screen as a distinct source of context. Invoked from anywhere on screen, it can answer questions about visible content, summarize information and provide additional details. Apple gives the example of asking for alternative products while viewing an item for purchase.

Screen context and targeted selection

Users can add the currently focused window to an AI request with Command + Shift + Space. For more precise input, Command + Shift + 6 opens a crosshair tool for selecting part of the screen. A user can then ask a question about that selection or launch an image search.

The selected content can also surface contextual shortcuts, including select, add to contact and look up location. This positions Siri alongside browser sidebars and productivity applications that use open tabs or the active window as context, while making the interaction available at the operating-system level.

The broader Apple Intelligence direction is reflected in Apple Intelligence and Siri platform expansion and its account of Siri’s expanding role across Apple’s platforms. On the Mac, the emphasis is on applying those capabilities to the documents, windows and text fields used in desktop work.

Spotlight, writing tools and Safari changes

Spotlight Search can now accept Siri questions and return answers from the web. It also lets users constrain searches to Applications, Files, Actions or Clipboard, run Shortcuts and revisit recent search history. Because Siri can access files, email and messages, Apple says users can retrieve details such as membership IDs, trip information and dates without manually opening individual items.

Writing features extend to any text box: users can select text for proofreading, improvement or rewriting, or ask Siri to draft text. Safari gains AI-powered page tracking for changes including price drops, privacy-policy updates and new posts where RSS is unavailable. The browser can also organise tabs by topic.

Interface and workflow updates

Golden Gate also refreshes the interface with Liquid Glass icons, an adjustable Liquid Glass slider, more consistent window corner radii, edge-to-edge sidebars and stronger active-window highlighting. Finder and save dialogs can suggest file names based on context. Other additions include enhanced child safety controls, shared cross-platform photo albums, an updated eraser, improved Mail search, iPhone Mirroring app resizing and quick calendar-event suggestions.

Businesses considering macOS 27 should evaluate which files, messages, email and visible screen content can be included in Siri requests, then test the new shortcuts and writing flows against their existing access and review practices before broad deployment.
