Microsoft Details RTX Spark Surface Laptop Ultra and Dev Box

Microsoft has revealed specifications and pricing for two Windows systems built around Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip: the Surface Laptop Ultra and the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box. Announced at a San Francisco event during Tech Week, the Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,600 in its entry configuration, while a more powerful base model starts at $3,700. Configurations with additional memory and storage rise to $5,900, and Microsoft says the highest-end model is already out of stock.
The Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a workstation aimed at developers, starts at $6,000. Microsoft positions both machines for running AI models locally, using their CPU, GPU, unified memory and hardware changes including improved cooling. The company’s argument is that these systems can handle on-device AI workloads without cloud usage charges.
Windows 11 adds agent sandboxing
The systems ship with a revised version of Windows 11 that introduces Execution Containers. Microsoft says the feature is intended to make it easier to sandbox AI agents. CEO Satya Nadella said Execution Containers will be available to all Windows 11 users, not only buyers of the new RTX Spark hardware.
Nadella described the platform requirement as more than a model alone: applications need orchestration, memory outside the model, context and an action space. Microsoft is enabling that layer for its own applications as well as applications built for other agents. That platform direction aligns with Microsoft enterprise AI market strategy as Microsoft broadens its enterprise AI position beyond individual model capabilities.
Developer-focused hardware and tools
Microsoft is explicitly targeting developers with the new devices. It is offering as much as $1,000 off to buyers trading in a MacBook Pro, reflecting the popularity of Apple hardware among developers and AI-agent enthusiasts. The Dev Box includes VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, Windows Subsystem for Linux and PowerShell 7.
Microsoft also says the graphics capability can support content creation, video processing and gaming. Nvidia had announced agreements with Microsoft and other PC makers in June to develop Windows PCs designed for AI and agent workloads around RTX Spark, but the detailed specifications of the machines had not been disclosed at that time.
Dell joins the RTX Spark Windows line-up
Dell announced details of its Dell XPS 16 Creator Edition on the same day. The Nvidia RTX Spark Windows PC is available for pre-order through Best Buy, with delivery planned for later October and a listed price of $3,800.
For businesses evaluating local agent and model workloads, the announcements make hardware capability, Windows isolation features and developer tooling central considerations alongside the purchase price. Teams can compare the new systems against their model requirements, memory and storage needs, and the controls needed to sandbox agent activity before committing to an on-device deployment.
