Mistral AI secures €3 billion Series D led by Samsung

Mistral AI has raised €3 billion in a Series D financing round at a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion. The French AI lab described the transaction as the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company. Samsung Electronics led the round, while EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund and existing investor PSG Equity joined as co-leads.
The company said it will use the capital to scale compute capacity, build infrastructure, accelerate commercial growth and expand internationally. The round also included existing investors a16z, Nvidia and Salesforce Ventures, alongside new backers Advent, BlackRock and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
Funding supports Mistral’s sovereignty strategy
Mistral positions itself as an AI lab rather than a European equivalent of ChatGPT. Its strategy is increasingly focused on governments and corporations that want greater control over how models are selected, deployed and governed. That positioning is tied to concerns in Europe and elsewhere about dependence on US technology providers.
The company plans to build 1 GW of compute capacity in Europe by 2030. In August, it introduced tools allowing customers to choose the regions in which their AI queries are processed. Mistral has also begun hosting third-party open-weight models, including Chinese models, as part of an AI services offering designed to give customers more choice over the models they use.
International investors and a broader market remit
Mistral said its frontier research underpins its infrastructure, products and sovereignty proposition. The statement addresses questions around whether hosting external models would turn the company primarily into an inference provider. Its operations now span 20 countries, underlining that its commercial remit extends beyond France.
The company continues to work with US technology groups, notably through a strategic partnership with Microsoft that was significantly expanded in July. At the same time, Samsung’s investment has received support from French authorities. President Emmanuel Macron said the round reflected a French and South Korean ambition to build a “third way in AI.”
The financing gives Mistral resources to pursue a capital-intensive infrastructure programme while preserving an international investor base. As Mistral’s enterprise and sovereign technology focus illustrates Mistral’s enterprise and sovereign technology focus, organisations evaluating AI platforms should examine where workloads are processed, which models are available and how much operational control the provider can offer.
