Obama urges Democrats to prepare an AI safety framework
Former US President Barack Obama has urged Democrats to make artificial intelligence one of their central policy agendas and prepare a clear plan for its economic effects and safety risks. He made the remarks on Thursday during a Democratic fundraising event, where House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries asked how congressional Democrats should approach AI.
Obama said that, if Democrats regain the House majority, they should create a framework for a highly visible public conversation. He described AI as a technology moving very quickly in private hands and warned that failing to address it could be dangerous.
A call for public AI governance
At the same time, Obama stressed that AI could produce substantial benefits if it is managed effectively. He cited drug development as an example, saying the technology could accelerate work that helps cure diseases.
Jeffries said in a statement that decisive action on artificial intelligence is necessary. He also criticised Republicans, saying they had abdicated their responsibility to govern on behalf of the American people.
Safety proposals gain attention
The intervention comes amid heightened concern about AI safety. Obama has offered to act as a sounding board for AI executives and has spoken with Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei and OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman.
Debate has sharpened after an Anthropic researcher resigned and alleged that leading AI companies were racing towards self-improving superintelligence while taking unacceptable risks. On Saturday, Amodei set out a broad proposal for “pacing the frontier,” including access for independent safety evaluators to leading companies and models, as well as common safety standards across companies.
Altman said OpenAI would commit to independent evaluators with employee-like access. Elon Musk and Altman appeared to respond positively to Amodei’s proposal in social-media posts. President Donald Trump also discussed AI safety with reporters at an Irish golf event, saying the United States should retain its technological lead because “whoever wins AI wins.”
What organisations should take from the debate
Obama’s remarks and the industry proposals point to a policy discussion that is moving alongside technical development. Businesses deploying or procuring AI should keep governance, independent evaluation and emerging safety expectations in view when setting adoption priorities and risk-management processes.
