OpenAI expands ChatGPT into workplace collaboration
OpenAI introduced Space, Pages and collaborative slides for ChatGPT at its Dev Day developer conference in San Francisco. The new features are aimed at office workers and add shared workspaces, document creation and presentation work to the company’s chatbot.
Space is a shared area within ChatGPT where colleagues can collaborate with the chatbot and with Dots, OpenAI’s newly launched AI agent personas. OpenAI describes Dots as agents that can carry out tasks on a user’s behalf.
During the presentation, OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said that pages and files live together in Space as they would in a drive, but that “spaces feel alive.” He said a user could give a page an instruction to check a team channel and update the page with what it finds.
Documents and slides built for people and agents
Pages is the company’s companion word processor, described by OpenAI as “a new type of document, built for human and agent collaboration.” Users can write, research, generate charts, create images and visualise information within it.
The product resembles capabilities associated with Google Docs and Microsoft Word, while collaborative slides extend ChatGPT into presentation work commonly handled in PowerPoint. A user can create slides by talking about them in ChatGPT, after which multiple workers and agents can collaborate, comment and edit the material.
The workplace focus follows OpenAI’s push into organisational use of ChatGPT. The scale of that move is reflected in OpenAI's 20 million ChatGPT Work users and helps explain why shared spaces and agent collaboration are becoming central product features.
Competitive pressure in workplace software
These additions place OpenAI more directly in areas long associated with Microsoft’s workplace software. Microsoft has been a close OpenAI partner, yet OpenAI is now introducing tools that combine chat, files, documents and slides in one environment.
Microsoft and Salesforce are moving in the other direction as well, releasing AI products over the past year while the software industry responds to a changing market. The announcements show how AI capabilities are increasingly being folded into the everyday tools used to create, organise and share work.
For businesses, the practical implication is to assess how shared AI workspaces, agent actions and collaborative documents would operate alongside existing team channels, review processes and file-management practices before introducing them into routine work.
