OpenAI’s Dots Lead to Discuss Personal Agents at Disrupt 2026

Alexander Embiricos, OpenAI’s product lead for Dots, will appear at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 on October 13–15 at Moscone West in San Francisco. His session, “What Comes After the Chatbot?”, is scheduled only days after OpenAI unveiled Dots, an always-on personal AI agent.

Dots are designed to do more than answer prompts. OpenAI says the agents have their own cloud computers, can connect to the applications people use every day and can continue working toward a goal in the background. The product therefore represents a move toward systems with greater access to work and digital life.

From chatbot responses to background work

At Disrupt, Embiricos will discuss the thinking behind Dots and where OpenAI believes personal agents are heading. The central question is what changes when AI starts acting for users rather than simply returning an answer to an individual request.

The discussion will also address the limits of that autonomy: how much control users are willing to delegate, which actions an agent should take without asking and whether companies can earn sufficient trust as agents learn more about users and handle increasingly sensitive information.

The appearance adds to the AI programming at the event, where Anthropic and OpenAI at the AI Stage will bring Anthropic and OpenAI to the AI Stage, placing personal-agent design alongside a broader industry debate about how advanced systems should be deployed.

Trust becomes a product requirement

Dots’ cloud computers and app connections make the questions around permissions and oversight especially concrete. An agent that can keep working in the background may be useful for longer-running tasks, but it also requires users to understand what access has been granted and what the agent is allowed to do on their behalf.

Embiricos will join more than 250 technology leaders across more than 200 sessions, roundtables and breakouts at the conference. TechCrunch says the programme spans six industry stages and expects 10,000 founders, investors and operators to attend.

Implications for business teams

For businesses evaluating autonomous AI, the practical implication is to define permissions, sensitive-data boundaries and approval points before connecting an agent to operational applications. The value of background execution must be assessed alongside the control and trust conditions that enable people to use it.
