Former OpenAI Engineer Detained in Alleged Conference Room Recording Case

A U.S. court has granted the government’s request to detain Abdulrahman Alfozan, a former OpenAI engineer accused of installing a covert audio-recording device in an executive conference room at the company’s San Francisco office. Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national who joined OpenAI around July 2025 on a $385,000 annual base salary, faces a charge for allegedly using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications.

The charge has a maximum possible sentence of five years in prison. Prosecutors said their investigation remains ongoing and argued that Alfozan presents a flight risk because of his resources, alleged foreign-government support and planned travel to Saudi Arabia.

Alleged device and preparation

The Department of Justice alleged that Alfozan inserted a stealthy recording device into a USB port on the back of a television in the executive conference room. Prosecutors said he modified the device to prevent data transfer between it and the television, while encrypting content held on its microSD card.

The filing also states that he used his wife’s personal ChatGPT account to research how to build a continuous recorder capable of capturing microphone audio and saving compressed WAV files to an SD card. In the days and weeks before the alleged installation, prosecutors said he used an OpenAI productivity agent to identify meeting rooms used by leadership, executives and external partners, and spent considerable time near the room involved.

Saudi contacts cited in detention request

In a new filing, prosecutors said Alfozan was in frequent WhatsApp communication throughout 2025 and 2026 with a member of the Saudi Royal Family. The contact allegedly discussed a Saudi artificial-intelligence initiative and asked Alfozan to join it. In May 2026, the filing says, the individual told him that Saudi Arabia needed him more than the United States, and Alfozan replied “100.”

Prosecutors further alleged that the contact repeatedly sought to recruit him and asked when he would leave OpenAI. Alfozan allegedly said he would not leave until his stock vested. The government said the two communicated as recently as October 5, 2026, four days before his arrest.

Search findings and travel plans

A search of Alfozan’s residence and an initial review of electronic devices reportedly found components similar to those used in the customised devices identified in OpenAI offices. Investigators also found iPhone photographs dated September 22 to 28 that allegedly showed another concealed recorder and input/output panels on televisions and other equipment in OpenAI locations, including a second conference room.

The filing says a deleted September note contained links to recording devices, including products from Seeed Studio, whose devices were found in OpenAI’s offices and at the residence. Browsing history also showed access to a folder titled “Saudi Gov Docs” on October 4, while productivity-agent queries covered Saudi business and government engagements involving the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology between July and September.

Alfozan had planned to travel one way to Riyadh with his wife and son on October 12, prosecutors said. He was arrested three days earlier, while his wife and son had already left the United States. For businesses handling sensitive strategy, partner and government discussions, the allegations underline the importance of physical meeting-room controls, device inspection and access monitoring alongside digital security safeguards.
