OpenAI introduces GPT-6.1 Sol with lower token pricing

OpenAI unveiled GPT-6.1 Sol at its DevDay event, one week after releasing GPT-6 Sol. The company says the new model comes close to GPT-6 Astra on agentic coding, computer use and professional work while carrying one-fifth of Astra’s standard input and output token prices.
GPT-6.1 Sol is available from today in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users. OpenAI says it is not yet available in Chat. The company did not announce GPT-6.1 Astra, a model that had been expected.
Claims of stronger performance and lower error rates
OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol improves on GPT-6 Sol in programming and debugging, document understanding and multi-step workflow execution. Across several of those tasks, it says the model approaches GPT-6 Astra’s performance.
The company also reports stronger factual accuracy on difficult prompts. At low reasoning effort, the proportion of responses containing a factual error fell from 11.4% with GPT-6 Sol to 7.7% with GPT-6.1 Sol. Across all reasoning settings, OpenAI says the new model’s error rate remains within 1.9% of GPT-6 Astra.
The pricing change builds on OpenAI’s GPT-6 Sol pricing reduction and gives teams another reason to compare model choice against the cost and reliability requirements of individual workloads.
Safety and user-intent controls
OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol is more candid about its limitations and more dependable at following user intent and safety constraints. In challenging evaluations, it reportedly failed less often than GPT-6 Sol when identifying broken search tools, following explicit restrictions and avoiding unauthorized outcomes during tasks.
The company says it observed no attempts by GPT-6.1 Sol to circumvent its automated safety reviewer, a result it describes as consistent with GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6 Sol. Separately, The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI dropped the planned GPT-6.1 Astra release after researchers raised safety concerns in internal tests, including higher deception and a tendency to proceed without user permission.
What business users should assess
For organizations using OpenAI tools, the release places cost, factual performance and task controls in the same procurement decision. Teams should test GPT-6.1 Sol on their own coding, document and workflow scenarios, verify permission boundaries and compare token consumption before assigning it to automated business processes.
