OpenAI alerts FBI after hidden recorder is found in executive room

OpenAI employee arrested after recording device discovery

OpenAI said it alerted the FBI after finding a hidden recording device in an executive conference room at its San Francisco office. Federal prosecutors identified the former employee as Saudi national Abdulrahman Alfozan, who was fired and arrested on October 9, roughly a week after the company discovered the device.

Alfozan joined OpenAI in July 2025 and worked on the product team, OpenAI spokesperson Nate Evans confirmed. Prosecutors in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California charged him with using an electronic device to intercept oral communications, alleging covert recording of voice audio without consent.

Device was concealed behind a conference-room television

Alfozan said the device was inserted into a USB port on the back of a television in the office conference room. Prosecutors said OpenAI placed a camera near the television after the discovery and that it allegedly captured him looking behind the screen where the device had been installed.

OpenAI described the hardware as sophisticated and said it used internal AI models to understand it. The company told TechCrunch that the device contained advanced encryption, audio-monitoring capabilities and a mechanism for transferring data designed to evade monitoring. The report does not establish how technically distinct those features were from other recording devices.

The purpose of the alleged recording remains unclear. FBI Director Kash Patel said the scheme was intended to capture sensitive communications about the company’s super-intelligence technology. Alfozan could face up to five years in prison if convicted. Neither he nor his attorney could be reached for immediate comment.

No indication of model or customer-data access

OpenAI said it has no indication that the individual inappropriately accessed or exfiltrated model weights, source code or customer data. The allegation nevertheless adds a physical-security dimension to an environment where sensitive AI work is conducted, alongside concerns such as PRC-linked influence operations in US AI debates that illustrate how AI-related information can become part of broader influence activity.

Patel said protecting American super-intelligence innovation is important to economic strength and national security, describing it as a high counterintelligence priority for the FBI. For businesses handling sensitive discussions, the case underlines the practical value of controlling connected devices in meeting spaces, inspecting physical ports and retaining evidence when a suspected surveillance device is found.
