PayPal sale negotiations with Stripe and Advent reportedly advance

PayPal is reportedly continuing negotiations over a potential sale to Stripe and private-equity firm Advent, following a July proposal of $60.50 per share that valued the payments company at about $53 billion. The Wall Street Journal reported that a transaction could come together in the coming weeks, citing unnamed sources.

No deal has been announced. PayPal declined to comment on the report, while a Stripe spokesperson said the company does not comment on rumours or speculation. The talks place one of the largest established names in digital payments at the centre of a potentially significant industry transaction.

A proposed acquisition alongside a turnaround

The reported negotiations arrive as PayPal chief executive Enrique Lores pursues a turnaround programme. Lores joined the company in March after years at HP, and began making changes in April through an executive reshuffle and a new three-part operating structure.

The company split its operations into checkout solutions and PayPal; consumer financial services and Venmo; and payment services and crypto. In May, Lores told investors that PayPal would recommit to its fundamentals, including becoming a technology company again.

The reported $53 billion proposal has already focused attention on Stripe and Advent approach for PayPal and the implications of a combined Stripe and Advent approach for the payments sector. The latest report indicates that discussions did not end when PayPal initially resisted the July offer.

Cost reductions remain part of the plan

PayPal’s turnaround also includes cost-saving measures expected to reduce its workforce by 20% over the next two to three years. The company has faced a more difficult period after expanding sharply during the pandemic-era e-commerce boom.

Founded in 1998, PayPal was created by a group that included Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, Max Levchin and Luke Nosek. It subsequently became a major consumer and merchant payments brand, with Venmo among the businesses now placed inside the consumer financial services operation.

What businesses should watch

For merchants, payment platforms and fintech partners, the immediate facts remain limited: the parties have not confirmed an agreement, and the timing or outcome of the talks is uncertain. Still, the reported negotiations make it prudent for businesses that depend on PayPal, Stripe or Venmo services to review provider dependencies and continuity arrangements while the companies’ strategic direction remains in flux.
