Photon secures $4.5M for messaging-based AI agent platform

Photon has raised $4.5 million in seed funding to expand a developer platform for AI agents that operate through messaging and communications channels. The startup supports deployments across iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, RCS, email and voice, and says it has attracted more than 40,000 developer sign-ups.

The company said revenue grew 10-fold over four months, messaging volume rose fivefold in the most recent month, and churn is below 3%. The seed round was co-led by Gradient and A*, with participation from Vercel, HongShan, Z Fellows, Llama Ventures, Karman and angel investors.

A platform for agents beyond standalone apps

Photon’s central proposition is that users may prefer interacting with services inside messaging products they already open every day instead of discovering and installing another mobile application. To make that possible, it provides a unified API, an extensible channel framework, a command-line interface and an observability suite for building and operating agent experiences.

Co-founders and CEO Daniel Tian and CTO Ryan Zhu developed the idea after building consumer applications and repeatedly encountering the problem of distribution. An iMessage-based agent offered a way to reach users inside Apple’s Messages. The founders later open-sourced related technology on GitHub, where it gained adoption among thousands of developers.

Photon staged a tongue-in-cheek “funeral” for mobile apps in a San Francisco church on September 17, including a coffin for app icons. The event also served as a developer day, with panels involving Vercel, Stripe and OpenAI. Tian said the transition from apps to agents would take time, while describing its direction as inevitable.

Open source, managed operations and compliance

The open-source product still represents 98% of Photon’s usage. In April, the company introduced a managed subscription platform intended for production deployments. Photon says the hosted offering provides 99.95% uptime, in contrast with running the open-source version locally for a hobby project.

The managed service is SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA-compliant, capabilities that Photon says enable healthcare agent use cases. Usage beyond 10 users requires customers to move from the free tier to one of three paid tiers. Photon does not disclose revenue figures, but says it now has paying customers.

Customers and ecosystem integrations

Named users include Corgi Insurance, Boardy, Ditto, Rho, Fliptexts and Slashy, alongside developers building agents for fintech, consumer AI and other sectors. Photon also lists technology integrations with Vercel’s Eve and ChatSDK, Nous Research’s Hermes agent, Tencent’s QClaw and NanoClaw, as well as LangChain, Mastra, Convex, Render, Railway and Telnyx.

Tian estimates that the hosted and open-source products together reach millions of end users. The company is initially focused on agents interacting with people, but it also sees a future agent-to-agent communication layer: an assistant handling travel planning, for example, could bring in specialized flight- or hotel-booking agents. For businesses, the practical implication is to evaluate whether messaging is the right customer interface while ensuring the chosen platform can meet reliability, observability and compliance requirements.
