Canada Gets First Court Approval to Remotely Clean Botnet‑Infected Devices

Colleagues, note: CSIS has obtained court authorization to remotely clean devices infected by botnets.

What happened:
- The court authorized modifying and deleting botnet code and disabling devices: servers, SOHO routers and IoT devices (phones, cameras, TVs).
- The operation targeted devices in Canada; the court deemed the threat imminent and measures proportionate.
- No IDing or content interception; incidental personal data was deleted. A question remains about collecting IP addresses without a warrant.

Why it matters: it highlights ageing SOHO/IoT vulnerabilities; update responsibility falls to device owners.

Are such measures sufficient, or are systemic fixes needed to protect consumer devices?
