WhatsApp usernames are already raising concerns over account impersonation

Friends, I’d like to share a tech update: WhatsApp has begun a phased rollout of username reservations.
This is a welcome privacy upgrade, as users no longer need to reveal their phone number immediately. But it also increases the risk of account impersonation and fraud.
In India, regulators have already flagged possible abuse scenarios involving fraud, phishing, and impersonation. Meta, meanwhile, says it will protect usernames for public figures and organizations.
I see an important balance here: convenience and privacy are a clear benefit, but identity verification will become even more critical.
Do you think usernames will make WhatsApp safer, or will they introduce new risks?
