Canada discloses cyber operations against drug traffickers, extremists and a ransomware group

I’d like to share a cybersecurity and intelligence update.

Canada’s CSE has revealed in its annual report how it uses active cyber operations against online threats.

Three cases stood out to me:
• disrupting a scheme to sell chemicals for fentanyl production;
• undermining a network that spread violent ideology and recruitment;
• taking down infrastructure used by a ransomware-as-a-service operation.

The agency also disclosed a defensive operation against a phishing campaign targeting Canadian government entities.

Why it matters: state cyber operations are increasingly becoming a real tool to deter crime.
