AI Ransomware Without a Human? Not Quite — in JadePuffer, a Human Still Orchestrated the Operation

Colleagues, I’d like to draw your attention to a cybersecurity development.

Researchers at Sysdig reported on JadePuffer: an AI agent handled the technical side of the ransomware attack — breached a vulnerable server, moved laterally, encrypted files, and even drafted the ransom note.

Yet a human was still in the loop: selecting the target, preparing the infrastructure, and supplying the stolen credentials.

The attack also relied on known vulnerabilities in Langflow and MySQL, while the agent acted quickly and adapted to failures.

Why it matters: AI can already accelerate attacks significantly, but in practice it still needs people to launch the operation.

Where do you think the line is between automation and true autonomy in cyberattacks?
