Open AI Is Not Replacing Anthropic Yet: Market Runs on Two Playbooks

I’d like to share one observation from the AI landscape: the rise of open-source models has not yet hit frontier labs as hard as many expected.
In practice, two stages seem to be at work:
— expensive models are used first to identify a viable approach;
— once tasks mature, they shift to lighter, cheaper solutions.
At the same time, overall spend on premium models is barely declining. According to the report, Anthropic still accounts for more than half of AI spend on platforms like Vercel, despite the growth of DeepSeek and other open-source solutions.
Why this matters: the AI market is expanding faster than substitution is happening. In other words, open source is more often winning production, while frontier models are driving discovery.
