NHTSA has called on AV developers to stop situations in which robotaxis impede police, fire crews and medics.

The regulator points to a recurring pattern: vehicles enter emergency zones, block access and fail to recognize sirens, lights, flares, smoke and cones.

Companies must present their solutions by the end of the month. This is no longer a “rare edge case,” but a systemic safety issue.
