Meta launches its own AI chips: what this means for the market

A quick update from the AI chip space.
Meta is preparing to begin production of new chips for its AI workloads as early as September. According to Reuters, the company is backing MTIA and aims to reduce its reliance on expensive GPUs.
Key details:
- Meta is co-developing the design with Broadcom;
- manufacturing is assigned to TSMC;
- memory will be supplied by Samsung, storage by Sandisk, and optics by Sumitomo Electric.
Meta is building a more flexible, modular infrastructure for training, ranking, recommendations, and inference.
Why this matters: the AI market is moving beyond exclusive dependence on Nvidia and AMD. Companies want greater control over cost, supply, and the pace of AI development.
Do you think custom chips will become the norm for major AI companies?
