Colleagues, a case showing how a cybersecurity insider helped BlackCat and received 70 months

Colleagues, I’d like to draw your attention to an important case involving cybersecurity and insider threats.
A former ransomware negotiator was sentenced to 70 months in prison in the U.S. for assisting BlackCat.
He worked with five extortion victims, while also passing confidential information to the attackers, including negotiation positions and insurance coverage limits.
He was also linked to two other professionals who, in 2023, helped target new BlackCat victims.
Nearly $10 million in assets has already been seized.
Why it matters: even a contractor or external expert can become a point of risk if access controls and action monitoring are insufficient.
How do you assess the main threat here — insiders or weak process controls?
