EU Presses Meta to Remove “Sticky” Mechanics from Facebook and Instagram

The EU has said Meta must review Facebook and Instagram over “sticky” features such as infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications, and recommendation systems.

Regulators argue that these mechanics reinforce compulsive scrolling and pose particular risks to children and vulnerable users.

Time-management tools are also under scrutiny; according to the Commission, they are too easily bypassed and do not provide meaningful control over the service.

If the findings are confirmed, Meta could face fines of up to 6% of its global annual turnover.
