Colleagues, note this: paying a ransom does not stop extortionists — it often brings them back

Colleagues, I want to draw your attention to an important cyber story. If a company pays a ransom, that does not necessarily solve the problem.

Proofpoint surveyed 953 companies and found that more than a third of those that paid extortionists received a repeat demand.

The playbook is no longer limited to a single payment. Attackers retain stolen data and pressure victims with the threat of publication. The Klue and Change Healthcare cases confirm it: even after a deal, data may remain in criminal hands.

Why this matters: ransom payments do not guarantee data recovery and may invite further pressure.
