Google Strengthens Account Recovery and User Verification with Video Selfies and Gestures

Colleagues, I’d like to draw your attention to a cybersecurity and account protection update.

Google has introduced a new account recovery option: video selfie. If you lose access to your phone or computer, you can verify your identity via camera.

This feature works as an additional layer on top of familiar methods — email and phone number. The video is matched against a pre-saved sample, with data stored in encrypted form.

Separately, Google Cloud Fraud Defense is testing hand-gesture verification in front of the camera instead of classic reCAPTCHA images.

Why it matters: verification is becoming more convenient, but the need for biometric controls is also growing.
