WhatsApp brings browser-based audio and video calls, transfers, and waiting rooms

On July 28, 2026, Meta added audio and video calling to WhatsApp for Web. Users can now make and receive calls in a browser instead of relying exclusively on the smartphone app or WhatsApp’s native desktop application.

Why browser calling matters

The web interface now has a Calls tab containing call history and favorites. It also supports capabilities already available in the desktop app, including screen sharing and reactions during calls.

This removes an installation barrier for employees working on managed, shared, or temporary computers. It also makes WhatsApp more practical for customer conversations and internal meetings conducted from a browser.

Call transfers, access controls, and clearer audio

Calls can be transferred between devices without disconnecting. A conversation started on the web or desktop can therefore continue on a phone, helping users move away from their desks without ending the session.

Meta is also introducing waiting rooms for group calls. When creating a call link, a host can enable Require approval to join, admit participants at the appropriate time, or remove them. The feature gives work-call hosts more control when a meeting link has been distributed beyond a closed participant list.

Background noise suppression is being added to filter sounds in busy locations. WhatsApp will also begin streaming video in high definition within the first few seconds of a call, rather than taking additional time to switch to HD. Separately, the company has opened username reservations; once usernames launch, people will be able to use them to call other users across platforms.

For businesses, the practical benefit is a more flexible communications workflow: staff can join from a browser, share a screen, control meeting access, and transfer an active call to a phone. Companies using WhatsApp operationally should review call-hosting practices and decide when approval-based entry is appropriate.
