Reddit expands AI-powered moderation
Reddit has announced infrastructure and tool changes intended to make participation easier, improve protection against scraping and spam, and support community moderators. A central element is an expanded test of Rules Hub, its AI-powered moderation suite, which was initially used by more than 700 communities.
All newly created communities can now test Rules Hub. Reddit said the product will become widely available to both new and existing communities later this year. The company is also developing more advanced abuse-prevention systems that could lessen communities’ reliance on account-age and karma thresholds when deciding who may post.
Karma is Reddit’s reputation system, built from upvotes on helpful, friendly or funny posts and comments. It was originally designed to deter spam, bots and trolls, but many communities have also used karma and account-age requirements that can prevent legitimate new users from participating.
How Rules Hub uses language models
Rules Hub uses large language models to determine whether a post or comment matches the intent of a community rule. Reddit says this approach can better handle natural language, nuance and edge cases, while allowing moderators to choose when a rule should be automatically enforced and what action should follow.
Reddit did not say karma will disappear. Instead, it said stronger built-in abuse controls could do more of the moderation work, making it easier for genuine newcomers to take part and for moderators to welcome them with confidence.
The company is also extending tools that help moderators tell users about community rules while they post or comment, and that help members set community-specific flair. In parallel, Reddit plans to move moderator workflows on Old Reddit to its new stack and migrate other critical bots.
Participation is a product priority
The changes arrive as Reddit seeks to turn its half-billion weekly active users into daily users through product updates. Its second-quarter results included $805 million in revenue and earnings per share of $1.25, although CEO Steve Huffman described search referral traffic as “choppy.”
