Replit launches Free Mode powered by GPT-5.6 Luna

Replit opens Free Mode with GPT-5.6 Luna

Replit has introduced Free Mode, powered by OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Luna, to let users shape ideas into working software without worrying about token costs. The startup says the offering is intended to make software creation available to millions of users, including people without a technical background.

Free Mode can be used to build applications, agents and other types of software. Amjad Masad, Replit’s co-founder and CEO, said the product gives users access to an experience for creating software in Free Mode using GPT-5.6 Luna.

The launch builds on a longstanding relationship between Replit and OpenAI. Replit was an early GPT-3 user, developing products as natural-language software development began to emerge. The companies frame the new offering as an example of how improved model capability and price performance can broaden access to software creation.

Project context remains available across modes

In Free Mode, Replit users can receive answers, suggestions, feedback and analysis in seconds without consuming usage. Replit Agent understands the full context of a user’s projects, allowing it to support planning, ideation, optimisation and exploration before a user moves into Build Mode.

This approach keeps exploration and creation in the same environment rather than treating them as separate steps. When a task needs more advanced reasoning, Replit can route it to GPT-5.6 Sol and then return the user to Free Mode powered by GPT-5.6 Luna while preserving project context.

Model cost had been one of the final barriers to making software creation broadly available, Replit said. The company credits GPT-5.6 Luna’s combination of capability, price performance and reliable inference at scale with enabling Free Mode for millions of users.

Price changes underpin broader access

Masad linked the launch to recent OpenAI price cuts, saying they made it possible to offer Free Mode to millions. The economics behind the release reflect OpenAI GPT-5.6 Luna and Terra price cuts and show how lower-cost model access can be applied directly to a product’s entry experience.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said a world in which anyone with internet access can build a product or startup could create a much broader entrepreneurial opportunity. Masad similarly described software as an empowering tool and said expanding the number of people able to build by 100 times would extend that opportunity more widely.

For businesses, the practical implication is to evaluate where affordable, context-aware AI can support early-stage planning and experimentation, while reserving more advanced reasoning for tasks that genuinely require it.
