Restate secures $20M Series A for durable AI workflow infrastructure

Berlin-based startup Restate has raised a $20 million Series A to expand its durable workflow infrastructure as companies deploy more AI agents. Singular led the round, with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures. Restate says the funding will be used to hire go-to-market staff and engineers and to enlarge its San Francisco Bay Area office.

Founded in 2022 by Stephen Ewan, Igal Shilman and Till Rohrmann, Restate developed an execution engine for multi-step workflows that can withstand crashes and network interruptions. The company did not initially build the product specifically for AI agents, but Ewan says the technology fits the operational problems these systems expose.

Durability becomes central to agent workflows

Agent workflows differ from conventional software processes because they can run for longer periods and follow inherently unpredictable paths. Ewan said organisations need to track exactly what has happened in a process so that it can be reproduced and reach a consistent outcome.

Restate’s intended role is to ensure that, when a process fails in the middle of its execution, the system can automatically recover. The company has signed multiple six- and seven-figure customer contracts in recent months, Ewan said. Its customers include Replit, while its wider customer base also includes Fortune 500 companies, including firms in financial services.

Architecture and competitive landscape

Rather than building its durable execution engine on an external database, Restate created its own storage, replication and redundancy layers. Ewan said this approach makes the system fast and lightweight. The company is seeking to make durability practical beyond the heavyweight workflows for which such engines are often used.

The new capital also positions Restate against Temporal, a major provider of durable infrastructure. Temporal, founded in 2019, announced a $550 million Series E at a $12.55 billion valuation earlier this month. Restate is smaller, but its founders bring experience in stream processing and open-source infrastructure.

Founders’ technical background

Before launching Restate, Ewan co-created Apache Flink, an open-source stream-processing framework. He later became CTO of Data Artisans, which commercialised the project. Alibaba acquired Data Artisans in 2019 and renamed it Ververica, where Ewan remained CTO for three years. Shilman and Rohrmann were also Ewan’s former colleagues at Data Artisans and Ververica.

What businesses should evaluate

For businesses introducing AI-driven processes, the relevant question is not only what an agent can accomplish but what happens when an extended workflow is interrupted. Teams should evaluate whether their automation can preserve execution state, record actions and resume safely after failures or network disruption.
