AI account security controls differ across ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity
Users who suspect unauthorised access to accounts on ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity can review or revoke sessions, but each platform exposes different controls. ChatGPT and Claude show active sessions and allow a user to remove an individual device. Perplexity does not show session locations, instead offering a command to sign out of all sessions.
The differences matter because AI accounts can contain conversation histories and access to paid services. TechCrunch recommends unique passwords held in a password manager and multi-factor authentication (MFA) where a platform supports it. ChatGPT and Perplexity offer MFA; Claude uses email login links rather than passwords.
ChatGPT provides a device-level session view
In a desktop browser, ChatGPT users can select their username in the bottom-left corner, open Settings, then Security and Login, and choose Active Sessions. The page shows where the account is signed in. An unrecognised device can be signed out individually, or the user can select Log out all to end every session.
Changing a ChatGPT password requires signing out first. On the login page, users enter their email address, select Forgot password, and continue. OpenAI then sends a six-digit code by email, after which the user can set a new password. The email also includes a password-reset option with the official steps.
Claude uses email links instead of passwords
Claude users can open their username menu in a desktop browser, choose Settings, and select Account to find Active sessions. Hovering over an unfamiliar session reveals a three-dot menu, where it can be logged out or terminated. The same page includes a Log out of all devices option.
Anthropic does not allow Claude accounts to use passwords. After ending sessions, the user signs in again through their email address and receives a login link. That approach means there is no Claude password to change. The session controls are relevant as Claude's paid-user growth and ChatGPT competition expands its paid-user base and continues narrowing the gap with ChatGPT.
Perplexity requires a full session reset
Perplexity does not provide a list showing where an account is logged in. Users concerned about access must open the username menu, select All settings, choose Sign out of all sessions, and confirm. They can then sign in again by entering an email address and using either the unique six-digit code sent by email or the email’s sign-in button.
For businesses, the practical response is to make AI-account session checks part of account hygiene. Review unfamiliar activity, revoke access when it cannot be identified, maintain unique credentials, and enable MFA on services that provide it.
