Apple delivers the Siri it promised in the iOS 27 consumer beta
Apple released its long-delayed Siri AI in the consumer beta of iOS 27 in July. The assistant can now hold natural conversations, draw on broad world knowledge and use personal context to surface information stored on an iPhone. The general public is expected to receive the upgrade with the official iOS 27 release in September.
The result is a functional and, in many respects, impressive assistant. Yet it arrives after rival AI systems have moved beyond chatbot-style help into coding, software creation, multi-step agents, computer use, reasoning, memory and media generation. Capable conversational assistance no longer feels as novel as it might have when Apple first set out its plans.
What the new Siri can do
Users can speak naturally with Siri, adjust the expressivity and pacing of voice responses, or type instead. A dedicated app provides another way to use the assistant and refer back to past conversations.
Personal-context features allow Siri to locate photos, emails, contacts, messages and calendar appointments even when a request is vague. It can find the last receipt saved on an iPhone without being told its location, or retrieve information preserved only in an image, such as a driver's licence number or a screenshotted QR code.
Siri can open websites and act through apps to get directions, play music, edit a photo, draft an email or start an audiobook. It now consistently plays a requested song, podcast or audiobook in the user's preferred app, addressing a basic task on which earlier versions often stumbled.
The assistant can also help refine ideas, explain a topic, suggest recipes from available ingredients and answer questions about concerts or events using the user's location. Through the Camera viewfinder, it can identify or explain real-world objects, while another practical use is helping friends split a restaurant bill.
Gemini underpins Apple's approach
These improvements follow Apple's partnership with Google. The broader technical direction behind Siri's Gemini-based architecture in iOS 27 established Gemini as an important foundation for Siri in iOS 27, while Apple retained control of how the assistant runs across its hardware and cloud systems.
Apple did not simply rebrand Gemini. It used Google's AI technology to train and refine its proprietary Apple Foundation Models. Those models are designed to operate on Apple Silicon and through Apple's Private Cloud Compute infrastructure.
Why the launch feels less dramatic
The upgrade largely makes Siri work as users had long expected: it understands requests, completes common actions and provides direct answers instead of sending people to the web. After years of unreliable performance, that can feel more like the repair of a persistent product flaw than a revolutionary launch.
For businesses evaluating iOS 27, the practical issue is therefore reliability rather than novelty. Teams should test whether personal retrieval, drafting, navigation, media control and in-app actions reduce friction in real workflows, while remembering that the software remains in beta until the expected September release.
