SpaceX completes acquisition of AI coding startup Cursor

SpaceX has officially completed its acquisition of AI coding startup Cursor. Cursor confirmed the closing in a blog announcement, making the company part of Elon Musk’s SpaceX after a transaction that included an option for SpaceX to acquire Cursor for $60 billion.

The deal followed an April announcement that SpaceX and Cursor would develop technology together. That agreement also gave SpaceX the acquisition option. Two months later, when SpaceX became a public company, the businesses said they were moving ahead with the acquisition.

Cursor points to SpaceX computing infrastructure

In announcing the completed transaction, Cursor repeatedly cited SpaceX’s computing infrastructure. SpaceX has been renting that infrastructure to customers including Anthropic and Google. Cursor said joining SpaceX will give it access to what it described as the largest fleet of GPUs in the world.

“SpaceX is building the computing capacity needed to scale intelligence far beyond what exists today,” Cursor said. The company added that Cursor would be one place where that intelligence becomes useful.

A $60 billion option now becomes a completed deal

The closing turns the acquisition path outlined in April into an integrated corporate structure. The transaction also follows SpaceX’s acquisition of Musk’s xAI earlier in the year, placing Cursor alongside another AI-focused business within SpaceX.

The original transaction terms and the significance of the $60 billion acquisition option were set out in SpaceX’s $60 billion Cursor acquisition plan, which framed the proposed purchase against Cursor’s expected $2 billion funding round.

What businesses should monitor

For organizations using AI-assisted software development tools, the immediate issue is not a newly announced Cursor product or service change. The announcement instead centers on ownership and access to SpaceX’s compute resources, while providing no further product roadmap, pricing or integration details.

Teams relying on Cursor should therefore monitor future announcements for changes to product availability, infrastructure arrangements and enterprise integration. The completed acquisition makes SpaceX’s computing strategy a relevant factor in evaluating Cursor as a long-term development-tool supplier.
