Spotify to mark AI Persona profiles and restrict recommendations

Spotify to mark AI Persona profiles and restrict recommendations

Spotify will begin marking artist profiles that represent AI-generated identities with an “AI Persona” badge and will, by default, keep their music out of editorial, algorithmic and personalised recommendations. The company said the labels will start appearing in mid-September, while artists can begin self-disclosing through Spotify for Artists on August 11, 2026.

The badge will be visible in the profile banner and About section, in Search, and on track rows across playlists. Spotify will allow self-identification, but says it will not depend solely on artists to make that disclosure. It will review profiles whose names and images appear to portray photorealistic AI-generated identities.

Discovery is limited unless listeners opt in

AI Persona tracks will not be included by default in Spotify’s editorial or algorithmic programming, including personalised recommendations. The exception is an artist a user has chosen to follow: Spotify treats that action as an explicit signal that the listener wants more music from that profile.

Spotify says its review will start with profiles that meet pre-defined audience thresholds, covering more-listened-to artists first. Artists who believe the label was applied incorrectly will be able to appeal it. In the coming months, Spotify also plans a reporting tool for profiles users believe are AI Personas but have not yet been labelled.

A profile identity label, not a verdict on production

Spotify distinguishes the public identity of an artist profile from the methods used to make a song. The company says the AI Persona badge addresses whether a profile represents an actual human, rather than whether AI contributed to the music. Information on how tracks were made will continue to be available through AI Credits and SongDNA.

The measure expands Spotify’s AI policy, first announced in September 2025, which uses industry-standard techniques to identify and label AI music and prohibits unauthorised AI voice clones and deepfakes. It also arrives as Spotify develops AI-powered Prompted Playlists, AI DJ, chat features and forthcoming AI remixes.

The distinction will matter as licensed remix initiatives move forward. Through Spotify’s Merlin AI remix licensing initiative, fan-made remixes and covers can be licensed while directing money back to participating artists; the new badge is intended to help listeners differentiate those works from an AI-generated public persona.

What businesses should watch

For labels, distributors and music teams, Spotify’s approach makes profile identity, disclosure and recommendation eligibility separate operational questions. Teams managing artist metadata should prepare for review and appeal processes, while audiences retain a direct route to opt in by following a profile.
