Stability AI secures $76 million from entertainment investors

Stability AI, the company behind the Stable Diffusion image-generation model, has raised $76 million in Series B funding, taking its cumulative fundraising to $232 million. The round includes Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group and Electronic Arts, alongside AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures.

Chief executive Prem Akkaraju, who joined Stability AI in 2024, described the investment as an affirmation of a vision in which generative AI supports producers, musicians and storytellers. The company said the proceeds will expand its creative-production product suite and its professional-services business.

Entertainment partners become investors

The composition of the round stands out because several participants are also organisations with which Stability AI is building content, distribution and workflow relationships. Stability AI offers models for image, music and video generation, placing its technology directly in areas where media companies are testing how generative systems may fit creative production.

During the past year, the company has signed partnerships with Universal Music and EA, announced in October, and Warner Music, announced in November. Those arrangements give the entertainment groups a role in co-developing Stability AI tools, rather than limiting the relationship to licences for generated output.

Its work on audio models also includes Stable Audio 3.0 music-generation models, which illustrates the company’s effort to develop music-generation capabilities alongside its better-known image technology. The new capital is intended to support a broader creative-production portfolio and the services needed to deploy it for professional users.

Copyright and ownership questions remain

The funding arrives while Stability AI continues to face legal issues connected to generative AI. Getty Images sued the company in the United Kingdom, alleging infringement of intellectual-property rights through the use of Getty images to train an image-generation model. A judge ruled largely in Stability AI’s favour in that case.

A similar Getty Images lawsuit in the United States remains in progress. Stability AI was also sued in 2023 by co-founder Cyrus Hodes, who alleged that co-founder Emad Mostaque deceived him into selling his stake in the company.

What the round means for buyers

For businesses evaluating generative-AI providers, the round highlights that model capability is only one part of the decision. Licensing relationships, participation by industry partners, professional-services capacity and unresolved legal exposure are all practical factors when selecting tools for production workflows.
