Ukraine Tests Restored Starshield Connectivity After Drone Disruptions

SpaceX’s Starshield service, the military-grade version of its Starlink satellite internet system, appears to be operating normally again for Ukraine after a 10-day period of restrictions that affected Ukrainian military drones. Defense Minister Evgeniy Khmara told reporters that the service seemed restored, while stressing that the military was still conducting tests and had received no explanation for the earlier limits.

The disruption was reported to affect drones flying at around 100 miles per hour. At that speed, some aircraft lost internet connectivity, leaving the military to lose control of certain drones. Other drones became more vulnerable when they flew more slowly in an attempt to retain a connection.

Service returns, but the cause remains unclear

The Wall Street Journal reported that President Donald Trump called SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk on Wednesday and asked him to restore Starshield service. The report followed earlier Wall Street Journal reporting that Musk had ordered SpaceX to throttle Ukraine’s access to Starlink, although some sources said he had first discussed the matter with the Trump administration.

Neither the apparent restoration nor the continuing tests resolve the central operational question for Ukraine: why the restrictions occurred. Khmara’s comments indicate that the military is verifying service performance rather than treating the initial signs of normal operation as a final assurance.

Satellite connectivity as an operational dependency

Starshield is SpaceX’s military-focused offering built around the company’s Starlink internet system. The episode illustrates how a change in connectivity can affect the practical use of connected equipment, particularly when drone operations depend on a stable link at particular speeds.

The issue also arrives as Starlink’s availability and expansion remain subject to national and commercial decisions. In India, India’s Starlink suspension and SpaceX IPO implications reflects how a suspension can shape the company’s route to market and its wider business plans.

For organizations using satellite connectivity or other externally managed communications services, the practical implication is to identify where an interruption would alter operations, test systems under degraded connectivity, and understand which service decisions sit outside their direct control.
