Stripe Reportedly Finalizes Acquisition of OpenRouter Above $7 Billion

Stripe has reportedly finalized a deal to acquire AI gateway startup OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, Bloomberg reported. The proposed transaction would bring a service that offers access to more than 400 AI models into Stripe, which has not confirmed the report.

OpenRouter says it has 8 million users globally. Its platform enables customers to select different AI models for different tasks based on their requirements and budgets, while using a single access point rather than committing to one underlying provider.

A sharp change from OpenRouter's May valuation

The reported price is far above the valuation associated with OpenRouter's most recent funding announcement. In May, the company said it had raised a $113 million Series B at a reported valuation of $1.3 billion.

That round included Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures and Alphabet's Capital G. At the time, OpenRouter chief executive Alex Atallah compared the company to Stripe for AI, describing its role as a common interface for multiple systems that can help customers avoid lock-in.

Model choice becomes part of the infrastructure layer

The appeal of an AI gateway lies in the operational choice it offers: organisations can route separate workloads to different models rather than treating one vendor's model catalogue as their only option.
