Amazon adds proactive product and release alerts to Alexa

Amazon adds proactive product and release alerts to Alexa

Amazon has introduced “Update Me When”, a new Alexa for Shopping capability that sends personalised notifications when an event or release may be relevant to a potential purchase. Customers can ask Alexa to watch for a favourite brand’s product line, a new season of a television show, an artist’s concert tour, an author’s book release or a technology company’s new product.

The feature was announced alongside other AI-powered shopping tools. It changes the interaction from a shopper asking Alexa a product question at a particular moment to an assistant that can notify the shopper when a configured topic develops.

From product queries to configured prompts

At launch, people have to configure “Update Me When” alerts directly. Amazon’s examples focus on events that can create a reason to buy, such as entertainment releases, product launches and tour announcements. The company has not said that Alexa automatically creates these alerts; the current model is user-led configuration.

The addition extends Amazon’s work on Alexa for Shopping, whose broader service is described by Alexa for Shopping personal AI assistant as a personal AI shopping assistant and now includes a further notification-driven option. Rather than only returning information after a prompt, Alexa can keep a requested topic under watch and surface a relevant change later.

Existing shopping automation remains part of the offer

Amazon also highlighted its price-tracking function. A customer can ask Alexa to send an alert when an item reaches a specified price or discount percentage. If the customer chooses, Alexa can automatically buy the item when those conditions are met.

Other cited Alexa for Shopping functions include personalised deals, shopping guides, carts assembled from past purchases, price-history tracking, AI overviews in search and product-detail pages, transcription of handwritten lists into carts, and product comparisons. These tools cover discovery, evaluation and purchase preparation as well as price monitoring.

Business implication

For organisations that buy through Amazon, the immediate use is to set narrowly defined alerts around planned product releases or acceptable price points, while deciding separately whether any automatic purchase setting fits their approval and procurement controls.
