Amazon Adds Scam Verification to Alexa for Shopping

Amazon Adds Scam Verification to Alexa for Shopping

Amazon has added a scam-verification capability to Alexa for Shopping, its consumer AI service available through the Amazon website and mobile app. The company said around 360,000 customers contact its customer service operation each year to ask whether a message claiming to be from Amazon is genuine or fraudulent.

Customers can now ask Alexa for Shopping to assess those communications. Amazon said the AI can “definitively” confirm whether a message originated from its own systems by comparing it with the billions of messages the company has sent globally.

Checking message signals against Amazon records

The service evaluates sender information, message content, timing and message metadata, among other signals, when determining authenticity. Its purpose is to help customers distinguish legitimate Amazon outreach from messages crafted to imitate it.

Amazon said the capability will improve as customers report more suspicious communications. Those reports are intended to help the system identify scams more effectively over time.

The feature addresses a range of fraud themes that Amazon has already highlighted: fake order confirmations, Prime membership renewal alerts, account-suspension warnings, package-delivery notifications and job scams. These messages can borrow familiar transaction language to make recipients believe they need to act.

Another shopping-focused Alexa function

The rollout continues Amazon’s shift in Alexa product strategy towards shopping assistance. The service builds on Alexa for Shopping launch by adding authentication help alongside personalized deals, shopping guides, repeat purchases, AI product overviews and handwritten shopping-list transcription.

Amazon had already introduced verify@amazon.com, an address to which people can forward suspicious emails and receive a determination on whether they are real or scams. Its customer service site also includes an online form providing the same type of assistance.

Amazon also recently added Alexa alerts for relevant events, such as a favourite brand launching a product, a favourite author releasing a book or an artist releasing a record. The scam check broadens that shopping-oriented assistance into message verification.

Business implication

For businesses that communicate with customers at scale, Amazon’s approach underlines the value of clear verification channels and consistent message records: customers need a practical way to test suspicious notices before responding to them.
